Don Kaufman of Estes Park, CO died at home Monday November 6, 2006. He was 62 years old.

Donald Julius Kaufman was born November 11, 1943 in Richardton, ND. His parents were John and Kathryn (Fleck) Kaufman. He spent most of his life in North Dakota where he attended the Assumption Abbey High School. Don was a surveyor and engineer and had owned Olson and Kaufman Engineering and later Kaufman & Associates, both in Devil's Lake, ND. On January 13, 1996 he married Nan Belknap in Estes Park, where he had lived since 1991.

Don was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of Lodge # 1216 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Devil's Lake and past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. He was a member of the Devil's Lake Yacht Club and was an avid sailor. He also enjoyed woodworking and writing historical articles. He had written a number of books, on such topics as weight loss and Diabetes. In Estes Park, Don was a volunteer at Med-X Fitness Center and a lifelong devotee of health & fitness issues.

Survivors include his wife Nan Belknap of Estes Park, a son Bradley Kaufman and his wife Ann of Loveland, a daughter Stacey Rice and her husband Nathan of Phoenix, AZ, a stepson Evan Belknap of Estes Park, grandchildren Nick and Katie Kaufman of Loveland and Chet Rice of Phoenix, a brother Clayton Kaufman and his wife Kathy of Elora, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Don's life will take place Friday November 10 at 2:00 PM at the Aspen Lodge, 6120 Highway 7, south of Estes Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center of Montgomery, AL in care of Allnutt Funeral Service 1302 Graves Avenue Estes Park, CO 80517.
